New paintings!

So I didn't exactly do a few paintings a week like I said I would, but the last few days, I've been painting a bit more. These are all done in gouache, in fairly small sizes.

001 - Tree

I haven't done any personal paintings over summer, so now for the rest of the break, I want to do 3-4 paintings a week.

Edit: 07-28-2014

I made some small changes.

Figure Painting

I plan to go to figure painting twice a week for all of summer. It was my first day today, and the first time I've painted a portrait in about five months. It was a lot of fun! I just wanted to make a post showing my process. This painting was done in acrylics. In the future, I might bring gouache to these sessions.

This was after the first twenty minutes. I really just wanted to jump into painting, but what I should have done was spent more time on the drawing. Next session, I'll spend the first twenty minutes drawing.

This might be an hour or so into the painting. My teacher, Cameron Chun, once said that painting was all about fixing your mistakes, which I find very true. I'm always finding things to be adjusted. At this point, I'm adjusting, and making sure the paint is getting opaque enough.

Here, I started adding details, and always shifting the form. Fred Fixler said that to make a picture more interesting, you should simplify your tones. For example, for every one tone you have on the shadow side, you should have two. Or two light tones/one shadow tone. Here, there is a lot more going on in the light side, but it's really hard to consciously simplify.

While I enjoy the entire painting process, I can't help but find the last forty minutes to be the most satisfying. I added a lot more saturation to the shadow side, as if he's glowing. I think it's too much here, but I would rather push it, and learn from my mistakes. The forms are turning more nicely at this final stage.

I've always loved drawing portraits, and now it's exciting to paint them.

first pass at the portfolio

for the animation/illustration major at my school, i have to make and submit a mid-program portfolio review. i've recently scanned and taken photos of what i think is my best work. we have to submit a minimum of ten pages, although what's on there and how we format it is up to our choosing. there's a more design involved, but i just wanted to lay out what i have so far.

page 1

i wish i could take better pictures of the next 3 pages, but i can't? maybe i'll try to scan them at a fedex/kinko's.

page 2

page 3

page 4

gotta clean these up, but this will probably be my best page (but not my favorite.)

page 5

i went through a phase were i only painted rotting fruits. i need to get my grapes painting at school (i think.)

page 6

i didn't get the flesh tones correctly, but i find most of the shapes to be appealing enough.

page 7

page 8

i like most of this, but there are some pretty big perspective problems.

page 9

this is probably my fav drawing, but i don't know if it's enough for it's own page.

page 10

i wish i could draw better because this page would be much better.

some other drawings that might make it in.
